The Urinary Indican Test is an accurate, simple and inexpensive screening tool, allowing identification of the putrefaction of protein in the gastrointestinal tract. A positive test reflects a state of intestinal dysbiosis.
The identification of bowel toxicity followed by effective treatment is invaluable to many patients. It is especially useful for monitoring the early stages of gut detoxification, to identify when antimicrobial remedies have cleared dysbiosis and reinoculation with probiotic bacteria can commence.
How does testing the urine indicate a bowel abnormality?
Most of the indole produced by bacterial action on tryptophan is eliminated in the faeces. The remainder is absorbed, detoxified and excreted in the urine. With leaky gut a greater amount enters the bloodstream and is filtered through the kidneys. Or in constipation, where material sits in the intestine for an extended period, a larger amount of indoxyl sulphate may appear in the urine.
Reliability
Indoxyl sulphate is not broken down over time, nor is it affected by temperature extremes.

A person may suffer bowel toxicity due to carbohydrate maldigestion from bacterial/yeast overgrowth yet still have a negative urinary indican test. However, this is usually the exception, and occurs because indole is not being produced owing to insufficient protein having been consumed during the previous 24 hours. This can occur with vegetarians, children and the elderly. |
